GALLERY OF ONE-OF-A-KIND VELVETS
These are ability-expanding works that will not be repeated, and are an
attempt to push my design and techniques to new limits. Also, the middle
one is not a velvet.
"Near Waikani" - 36"x24" - framed - $1,200.
My first wahini painting - three attempts have been
made to capture the qualities of the original painting in
a photograph, all have failed. If you attended the 2008
Hukilau, you may remember how much better it looked
in person.
Sentinel of Matapua - 12"x16" - canvas mounted to board - price
to be determined.
This is my months-in-development homage to the old masters: a
layer of paint, a layer of varnish followed by another layer of
paint, and so on. It is as close to the old masters in style and
technique as I am currently capable.
The idea is to treat a Polynesian Pop subject in a completely
serious way. To take a lowbrow form of art and treat it in a
classical manner, as anti-pop, respectable even. If I could hang
this in the correct wing of an art museum and passersby couldn't
tell it was new, then I've reached my goal.
This painting comes with a double-awesome frame - when time
allows, I'll show a pic of it..

"Sugar Rush" - 24"x36" - $2700.
This was five continuous weeks of work!
Sugar Rush is an imaginary badass action movie character that I've been doing sketches of for ten years - long before I started painting velvets.
With any luck, she will appear again in some of the many scenarios I've designed for her.
Everything about this piece is big: the 864 square inches of velvet badassness, her awesome 'fro, her knit bikini top, the makarov in Sugar's left
hand (she is a southpaw), even the price!
Check out the detail of her hair, the red shag, the Makarov pistol, the ash of her cigar, and the wood texture of her Tiki ashtray.
I've never worked in this price range, but I've never put so much effort into a velvet before - about 40 days!
